Fun facts:
- Trick-or-treat: This stems from the medieval custom of "souling," where the poor would go from door to door offering prayers for the dead in exchange for food ("soul cakes").
- Spooky costumes: Originally, the Celts wore grotesque masks and animal skins to blend in with malevolent spirits, hoping to avoid being captured or possessed by them.
- The carved pumpkin: This originates from an Irish legend about a stingy blacksmith named Jack, who was condemned to wander in the darkness carrying a burning ember from hell inside a hollowed-out turnip. In America, immigrants replaced turnips with the much more common pumpkin, creating the universal symbol of the holiday.
